Giraffe Conservation Foundation

,

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is a science-based conservation organisation providing innovative approaches to save giraffe in the wild.

They are the only organisation in the world that focuses solely on the conservation and management of wild giraffes in Africa.

Who are the Giraffe Conservation Foundation?

Founded in Namibia, West Africa, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation began working on understanding the complex role of giraffes in their ecosystems in the late 1990s. Today, their work impacts over 100 million acres of giraffe habitat in 21 African countries.

In 2025, they helped to deliver a groundbreaking assessment which officially recognised that there are four distinct species of giraffe, ensuring that conservation work can be more specific and targeted at each population. You can read their latest State of Giraffe Report here.

How do they help?

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation use science and research to inform their conservation projects. In order to protect giraffes, we must know where they live, how many are out there, and how they behave. Using cutting-edge technology, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation are conducting large-scale population surveys on giraffes, even implementing complex pattern recognition software to follow individual giraffes!

Wild giraffe health is a vital part of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation’s mission. By bringing together wildlife vets from across Africa, they are able to provide training that allows for the safe and effective treatment of giraffes who need their help. Therefore, providing injured giraffes with a much better chance of survival.

How do we support them?

Project Giraffe is Blackpool Zoo’s long-term commitment to the conservation of the tallest land mammal in the world. Through raising awareness and delivering exceptional giraffe care, we hope to make a real impact for giraffes in our care and in the wild. Each year, we help to fund vital giraffe projects in Uganda, led by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. In 2026, we will be launching our NEW Giraffe Heights outdoor habitat, where our visitors will be able to experience giraffe conservation in action.
