Big Cats – Lions and Tigers

You are here

Unfortunately, the Big Cat House remains closed due to COVID-19 Restrictions. However, you can still see the cats in their outdoor enclosures.

Our Big Cat House is one of the earlier buildings on site and we hope to be upgrading it in the not too distant future. It’s currently home to our African lions and Amur tiger, although, slotted between them is our meerkat enclosure, always a popular destination!

Our lions, father and son, Wallace and Khari, enjoy a specious, multi surface outdoor enclosure with a heated “rock” which enables them to be out in the fresh air all year round. There are plenty of hiding places for the lions’ food which provides them with daily enrichment as they use their great sense of smell to find their meat.

The house also provides a home to our stunning Amur tiger, Alyona. The outdoor area comprises a large grass paddock with plenty of shrubs and trees for shade, a pool and platforms on which she spends much of hertime chilling.

Blackpool Zoo is Open!

As part of Step 2 of the national roadmap out of lockdown we are allowed to open once again.

However, we will not be allowed to open most indoor areas: the indoor eating area of the cafe is closed, as are the indoor viewing area of animal houses including elephants, big cats, giraffes, small primates, gorillas and orangutans. These animals all have access to their outdoor enclosures, however they may take themselves inside during inclement weather.  Lemur Wood and Rainbow Landings remain closed.

A full list of restrictions and measures in place can be found here.  Please ensure you read them before you book your tickets as they are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

We really look forward to welcoming you back to Blackpool Zoo.
