From Roarsome Dinosaurs to Animal Behaviour - we've got lessons to suit many areas of the Curriculum for everyone from Early Years to Undergraduates.

There will be a small admin charge of £10 per lesson or tour and each lesson or tour can accommodate up to 30 students. Each lesson will last for 45 minutes.

New for 2019! During the summer term we offer an exclusive schools and group 'Talk and Feed' programme covering generic curriculums.

We also have several trails around the zoo for 2019 - work sheets are printable from the bottom of this page.

EARLY YEARS' FOUNDATION

Detailed below are the exciting range of education lessons that we offer Early Years' students. All lessons last 45 minutes which includes 30 minutes classroom time.

Display or Hide Away

How do I look? The students will explore different animals, some that like to display and others that like to hide away. Investigating patterns, colours and textures this interactive experience allows younger students to begin to understand why animals look and sound like they do.

Follow our curious mascot, Toco the titi monkey, on his exciting sensory trail around the zoo.  Children can focus on each of their senses as they explore the fascinating sights, sounds, smells, textures and tastes of their Blackpool Zoo expedition! Click HERE to download your Toco Trail Sheet!

Key Stage 1

Detailed below are the exciting range of education lessons that we offer Key Stage 1 students. All lessons last 45 minutes which includes 30 minutes classroom time.

Habitats

Hot or cold, this is the opportunity for students to explore animal habitats and discover how animals have adapted to life in the desert and the Arctic region. Interactive and captivating the students will be inspired to consider climates, terrain and characteristics whilst taking a closer look at some of our animals and artefacts.

Science: Years 1 and 2 – Animals, including humans. Year 2 – Living things and their habitats.  Geography: Locational knowledge.  

Rainforest

It’s busy in the jungle and exploring rainforest animals and plants will keep the students busy too! This journey of discovery travels through the different layers of the rainforest spotting hidden animals along the way and stopping to mingle with a magnificent Madagascan minibeast!  NB This is a classroom lesson, the Amazonia Exhibit is now closed and will re-open at Birds of the World exhibit at Easter 2019.

Science: Year 1 – Animals, including humans. Year 2 – Living things and their habitats.  Geography: Locational knowledge. Human and physical geography.

Toco Trail

Roarsome Dinosaurs

It’s not just our lions that roar at Blackpool Zoo. T Rex really does come to life in our Dinosaur Safari which compliments our Roarsome Dinosaur activity. This is a great start to a dinosaur learning experience and presents a summary of dinosaurs across the Mesozoic era. Students will especially enjoy taking a closer look at our classroom lizard and artefacts, can they spot the dinosaur similarities? 

Science: Years 1 and 2: Working Scientifically. Year 1 - Animals, including humans. Everyday materials. Year 2 - Living things and their habitats.

Aardvark. Bongo. Camel. The choice is yours! This is a great opportunity to discover more about an animal with a 30 minute activity tailor made to suit your topic or curriculum requirements. Our specialists will guide you through adaptation, behaviour, nutrition and current information on your chosen animal’s status in the wild. We have over 300 species at Blackpool Zoo, you will be spoilt for choice!  

This covers a range of curriculum references including Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Understanding the World.

Key Stage 2

Detailed below are the exciting range of education lessons that we offer Key Stage 2 students. All lessons last 1 hour which includes 45 minutes classroom time (any exceptions are stated below).

Habitats Around the World

Hot or cold, large or small this is the opportunity for students to explore animal habitats and discover how animals have adapted to life in the desert, the polar region and the savannah including the Serengeti. Students are introduced to the risks facing many habitats and how we can protect animals and their homes. Interactive and captivating the students will be inspired to consider climates, terrain and characteristics whilst taking a closer look at some of our animals and artefacts. 

Science: Year 4 - Living things and their habitats. Animals, including humans. Geography: Locational Knowledge. Geographical skills and fieldwork.

Learn – Enjoy - Discover

Living in Danger

Gorillas, Amur Tigers, Bactrian Camels are animals we have at the zoo, they are all critically endangered and living in danger in the wild. These animals could become extinct. Why? Informative and compelling, ‘Living in Danger’ explains more about endangered species and uses our vast collection of animal artefacts to reinforce the messages.  Students will be enthused to be proactive in protecting and preserving our planet and our animals.

Science: Year 4 - Living things and their habitats. Geography: Locational knowledge. Geographical skills and fieldwork.

Suited for Survival

Tortoise and turtle shells, artic fox fur and stick insects all feature in this amazing topic of adaptations. Students will be challenged with ‘‘Odd One Out’ and dominoes as they investigate and determine why and how plants and animals are suited to their environment.  

Science: Year 6 - Evolution and Inheritance.

Detailed below are the exciting range of education lessons that we offer Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students.  All lessons last 1 hour which includes 45 minutes classroom time. 

Adapt and Evolve

Why is a giraffe so tall and how has a giraffe adapted to life on the savannah? This lesson identifies key adaptations and explores theories of evolution including natural selection. By gaining an understanding of animal ancestry students can assess the adaptations of animals and relate them to their evolution process. This learning experience is enhanced by fun activities and the examination of animal artefacts.

Biology: Working Scientifically. KS3 – Genetics and evolution. Relationships in an ecosystem. KS4 – Ecosystems, evolution, inheritance and variation.

History of Blackpool Zoo

It is hard to believe that Blackpool Zoo, now home to over 1500 animals, was once a home to airplanes! Learn about the transformation from airport to leisure facility and the history behind the 3 Blackpool Zoo sites. The presentation culminates in a tour of the older part of the zoo expertly led by our very own zoo historian.

Travel, Tourism, Marketing, Customer Service

This module tours the commercial environment of Blackpool Zoo and includes examining sales and marketing strategies used to maintain and increase business within this niche leisure market in a popular coastal town. This module is a great supplement to any vocational course and includes follow on activities to research whilst at the zoo.

Zoo Management and Licencing

Legalities and finance form a key part of this module as it details the mechanics and logistics of operating an effective zoo. Management of projects such as endangered species programmes and building animal enclosures is explained and discussed so that students gain a complete understanding of the role of a modern zoo and modern zoo practice working with umbrella bodies such as BIAZA and WAZA.

Explorer Tours

Detailed below are the exciting range of explorer tours that we offer students of all ages.

KS1 and below: Each session will last 45 minutes which includes 30 minutes touring time.

KS2 and above: Each session will last 1 hour, which includes 45 minutes of touring time.

African Adventure

An exciting adventure for students of all ages! Our specialist tour guide will travel with you presenting amazing facts and information on some of Blackpool Zoo’s astonishing African animals. Lions, gorillas, giraffes - this tour will absolutely bring Africa alive!

Big Animal Safari

Gorillas, tigers, orangutans this super safari tours the world of some of the planet’s largest animals. Suitable for all ages it allows students to appreciate just how tall a giraffe really is, to investigate how much food an elephant has to eat and what a camel actually stores in it’s humps!

Fun at the Farm

The farm is a firm favourite with our younger visitors and they are thrilled to be allowed special access in to our barn classroom to meet some of our fabulous farm animals. This is a great learning experience to support animal care and teeth and diet.

Pick-N-Mix Tour

Reptile, mammal, bird, – you can see them all on this tour! Navigated to visit animals of your choice this is an exciting tour to compliment specific curriculum and topic requirements. Suitable for students of all ages.

Rainforest Rangers

Students will relish the opportunity to take on the role of a Rainforest Ranger checking in with orangutans, tapirs and even capybaras, (the world’s largest guinea pig!). Free ranging lemurs in Lemur Wood offer students a greater understanding of animal life and the adaptations an animal needs to survive in the forest! This tour is popular with students of all ages.  NB The Amazonia Exhibit is now closed and will re-open at Birds of the World exhibit at Easter 2019.
