Bespoke Learning Programmes

You are here

Why not extend your zoo visit and let us create a Bespoke Learning Programme just for you. Learning Programmes are available for schools and groups of all ages and abilities, designed to suit your needs and requirements and provide fantastic enrichment for children, teenagers and adults.

Bespoke Learning Programmes are popular with a variety of groups and can be offered for 1 day or as a course over a number of weeks. Your Wildlife Learning experience will be supported by one of our expert Education Officers and can include classroom time in our state of the art Education Academy combined with practical husbandry tasks in the zoo. Our experienced staff are equipped to support all types of groups including individuals with additional needs, disabilities or challenging behaviour.

Examples of Activities

Classroom Theory Sessions
These sessions include using activity sheets designed specifically for your groups’ individual needs, as well as being interactive through the handling of biofacts (e.g: animal skulls and furs) and animals (e.g: invertebrates and reptiles).

Practical Grounds Tasks
Students work together as a team to help maintain the zoo grounds through clearing pathways of leaves and helping to clean windows and animal signs.  This gives students the opportunity to be absorbed into the zoo environment and interact with zoo staff and the public.

Practical Animal Tasks
These tasks allow students to complete a set task as a team using the tools provided to clean out a variety of animal enclosures such as elephants, giraffes and ostriches. Other activities include preparing animal diets and building enrichment toys for the animals to play with. Students will also be given the extraordinary opportunity to get up close and feed and some of our animals.

  • Learning and understanding about animals and the environment
  • Experiencing working behind the scenes in a unique zoo setting
  • Re-engagement, developing social and transferable life skills
  • Supporting the social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL)

Health and Safety

Experienced and fully trained staff run these programmes, who are DBS certified and safeguarding aware.  All tasks are fully risk assessed on a regular basis and we provide risk assessment guidelines for your use.

Prices from £50 per hour + VAT. This is for a maximum of 12 students and staff per session. Groups with specialist needs may be advised to reduce the number of students to ensure that all individuals are receiving the most from the experience.

Programmes can run for one day or for a number of weeks across the year.
