2017 - A Year of Celebration

You are here

2017 is set to be our most exciting year yet as we mark 45 years of really wild days out with 12 months of super celebrations, which will include the launch of our biggest ever investment – Project Elephant!

There's going to be plenty to celebrate this year - including the 100th birthday of our oldest resident, our 45th anniversary in July and welcoming our 15 millionth visitor.

However, the opening in summer of our most ambitious and biggest ever-single investment, a brand new elephant house, looks set to eclipse them all.

The building, which is one of the UK’s largest indoor elephant facilities, is well under way and work has now begun on the three-acre outdoor area, which will include a huge pool as well as grassed and sandy paddocks.

What's happening?

We'll be posting details of our celebrations here and on our Facebook page throughout the year, so make sure you keep checking back for more information. We're still finalising the details, but you can expect the celebrations to include:

  • The 100th birthday of our oldest resident Darwin the tortoise
  • Celebrating 10 years under the ownership of Parques Reunidos
  • Raising a glass to 10 years of the Pride of Blackpool
  • Marking 45 years since we first opened our doors, in July 1972
  • Welcoming our 15 millionth visitor
  • Recognising the support of local visitors

And of course, in the Summer we'll be opening our biggest and most ambitious project to date, Project Elephant, which is especially poignant as elephants were the first animals to arrive at Blackpool Zoo a whole year before we opened to the public.

Celebrate with us!

We’d like to share other people’s significant dates this year too, so please let us know if you’re celebrating anything at all, big or small - If it matters to you, it matters to us... and you never know, we might be able to help you celebrate in style!

You can let us know about your celebrations here.

Don't forget - our Birthday Parties and Animal Experiences can be a great way to celebrate a special occasion for the young and young at heart.

Here’s to an amazing 2017!

Blackpool Zoo is Open!

As part of Step 2 of the national roadmap out of lockdown we are allowed to open once again.

However, we are not allowed to open indoor areas (until 17th May): the indoor eating area of the cafe is closed, as are the indoor viewing area of animal houses including elephants, big cats, giraffes, small primates, gorillas and orangutans. These animals all have access to their outdoor enclosures, however they may take themselves inside during inclement weather.  Lemur Wood and Rainbow Landings remain closed.

A full list of restrictions and measures in place can be found here.  Please ensure you read them before you book your tickets as they are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

We look forward to welcoming you to Blackpool Zoo.
