Active Oceans - £1 million investment NOW OPEN!

Active Oceans - £1 million investment NOW OPEN!

We are proud to announce that Active Oceans, our new marine area which incorporates the penguin pool and newly refurbished sealion enclosure, was officially opened on Tuesday 25th May 2010 by the recently appointed Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Don Clapham.  Guests at the event also enjoyed a display by trainer Khaled Fawzy and sealions, Gina and Anya.

A complete overhaul of the pool and its surround began late last year and the refurbishment forms part of an ongoing development program at the zoo underpinning our reputation as a leading North West attraction.

The new pool - the largest sea lion pool in the UK - will be unrecognisable to returning visitors where stylish mock rock has replaced a concrete background and cascading waterfalls complete the transformation.  The wow factor is further achieved with glass walls which separate the amazing new 250 seat viewing gallery from the pool so that visitors of all ages can see the animals interact with the keepers at feeding times.

Director, Darren Webster, is delighted with the new enclosure. "This latest development is a dream come true for Blackpool Zoo.  Built in the 1970s the original pool  was in need of an upgrade and the transformation is amazing. The end result is perfect for both the animals and the visitors and forms a stunning centre piece that visitors of all ages will enjoy".
