We frequently get asked if we will host "phobia sessions" at the Zoo. The term "phobia" is often mistakenly used to describe general fears or feelings of apprehension. These can be caused by being close to various species of invertebrates or reptiles, for example, spiders or snakes.
However, the fact is that, if you can bear to be in a room with, say, a spider or a snake, then you do not suffer from a phobia related to that animal. The true meaning of a phobia is "an anxiety disorder stimulated by the object of one's fear". Somebody suffering from a phobia would experience panic attacks even when just in the presence of the source of their fear.
If this is the case, then we are unable to help you as we are not trained psychologists able to deal with phobias. We would also request that, if you fear invertebrates and reptiles, you don't attend the Creepy Crawly Experience, as this may pose a health and safety risk to you, other people present and to the animals themselves.
If you do suffer from a phobia, we advise you to speak to your G.P. who should be able to offer help.
